What will be of importance on September 7th will be the weather, the water and air temperature as well as the wind, but without a strategy it’s best not to even attempt endurance sports. Mine is the simplest there is: to survive. This is my debut in the triathlon, I haven’t swam more than 3.5 km at one go, and the maximum I’ve cycled non-stop was around 150 km. From the description of the route I gathered that we’re swimming the perimeter of a rectangle (950 m), which would mean that doing the perimeter four times requires changing the direction 16 times, which in turn means crowds at the buoys, losing the rhythm and thwarting the pace.

I have no idea what the changing area will be like, but I have to assume 7 minutes for getting changed and having a small snack. The cycling part is a bit of a mystery to me: the average speed of 28 km/h is hardly realistic as we will be doing 6 loops 30 km each without the possibility of the so-called drafting, that is seeking shelter in the aerodynamic tunnel behind another contestant (7 m intervals).

Also turning 180 degrees three times with each loop will be tiring and will bring the speed down. And there’s yet another hurdle: around 9:40 a much larger group of cyclists from the ½ IM will join us. I have no special plan for the running; I’ll simply divide the 6 loops 7 km each this way: first one for getting started, the three following loops for hard work, the fourth one for a crisis and as for the fifth one I am counting on the finishing line pull effect. May it come..
I know that at least one person would like to have access to online coverage from the challenge, i.e. my Dad, so we’ll do that. It will hardly be Eurosport, but we should get by with our home methods. Kasia will be passing updates from Malbork via phone. Ania, my sister, will post them in the blog under the heading: IRONMAN – GET SET, GO, and I think that she’ll write once per hour or more often. In order to see the new entries, one will have to push F5 (refresh the page) or reenter the website.

ZPKM – the Polish Association of Knights of Malta.

After September 7th this project will become history, and so I would like to use the opportunity to write a few words about who we are and what we do. The Order of Malta was created around the year 1070 following the first crusades and it is the oldest chivalric order surviving to this day. As early as in 1113 it was granted full sovereignty by Pope Paschal II, making it independent of both lay authorities and the Church. Thanks to its powerful fleet the Order acted as the guardian of the Mediterranean in its heyday, but at the same time it was a pioneer in building hospitals and it laid the groundwork for modern medical treatment. Having served as the prototype for present-day humanitarian charity, it still uses its credibility and prestige today in its numerous charitable efforts carried out worldwide. After as many as ten centuries its members are still involved with charitable work and running hospitals, duly passing on the support they receive. The Polish Association presents itself and its work on its website: www.zakonmaltanski.pl . And here are some numbers: in 2013 we extended continuous hospital care over more than 300 people for 365 days, and we provided medical services to almost 48,000 people. All throughout the year we carry out a number of assistance programs for the disabled, children and youth, but also to refugees from Syria and those wounded in the Kiev’s Maidan. This is our way of expressing gratitude for the help we received from abroad in the 1980s. The Polish Association of the Order of Malta functions on a smaller scale than the largest charity organizations but our focus is on quality and on the personal dimension when helping those in need – which, as we know, is no less important than cutting-edge medical technologies or solid financing. As the successor of chivalric traditions, the Order of Malta aims at passing on those principles to next generations.

In this project it was largely thanks to Jerzy Donimirski that the knightly values were properly highlighted, despite the current trend to the contrary. That’s how we came up with the charitable bet, many people show altruism and courage in co-creating this project, your generosity in helping the hospital is clear, some have sacrificed a lot (Kasia for sure), devoted their time (Ania the translator and Waldek the webmaster), and shown an unyielding attitude (Ania, my sister) – these are the examples. At the end, on top of the knightly attributes, I’m adding a few drops of sweat from myself – cold as it’s caused by fear.

Jedna myśl nt. „23. Strategia startu / ZPKM – ENG:”
