13. Pływacki wyścig dookoła molo w Sopocie / ENG: SWIMMING RACE AROUND THE PIER IN SOPOT

Sopot organizes interesting and unique events and the swimming race around the pier definitely belongs to this category. This body of water is otherwise closed for swimmers, also because of the newly constructed marina.

And so I am using the opportunity to see what it’s like at the starting line, in this “washer” where everyone is fighting for their space for strokes. The weather is beautiful but the wave seems kind of short, irregular and quite high. Around 230 people taking part, aged from 8 to 80!

Start!
Start! I run into the water to get energized but I’m not pushing forward as I want to see how the best ones – including active athletes – get organized in this race. And then I want to be mauled.

As the water gets deeper, I settle into the front crawl trying to catch a rhythm, but it proves impossible. The 50 cm irregular wave turns my “I want” into “can’t do”, and it keeps force feeding me on top of that! First, I give the wave a few kicks and then for the next half kilometer I keep on bumping into others pushing for their victory.. I keep drinking this saline water, gobbling it up.. and this is why I am here. A good learning experience. The race in itself is quite short, barely 1/3 of what I have to cover in the IM swim.

Finally I make it to the finishing line. I guess I am glad that this struggle is over.

respecto – dla tych co przede mną, ale i za mną/respect – for those before me but also for those behind me
I stand in line for the commemorative medal and I get a badge much like those you get in a cloakroom, with the number 120 for the place I scored. The time of around 30 minutes [distance ca. 1300 m] was according to plan but this number gives me food for thought.
Wojtek Ratkowski (post no. 12), told me that if I make a mistake in swimming, it will be very hard after that.
